| Nam: The Vietnam War in the Words of the Men and Women Who Fought There. Author - Mark Baker. The author based this 1981 volume on firsthand interviews with numerous unnamed military personnel who served in the war. Although LJ's reviewer found the anonymity a drawback, he said that "Baker's work does give frightening insights into the continuing long-range effects of the Vietnam experience upon those who were the most intimately involved" Sample Comment Twenty years ago I bought this book while serving my country in the US Air Force. This book contains the words of the vets who served in the "Nam" and the experiences they faced each day whether it was humorous, serious, happy or sad. Mark Baker would definitely get five stars for compiling the words of the GI who relays his or her own experiences of the Vietnam War as it happened. As a veteran myself, though too young to have served in Vietnam that ended just five years prior to when I joined the service, we're all brethren. Whether we served in both World Wars, Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraqi Freedom, Afghanistan, and even during peacetime like I did, we're like brothers and sisters. For the Nam vets who have helped make this book possible, I thank you for serving this great country. Sample Comment I am a child of the 80s, and have never had anything nice to say about war. I have always felt that war, and those people associated with it, were of some less intelligent class, a group of humans stupid or inhumane enough to do what is done in war. This novel gave me some very needed perspective, and endowed me with a sense of respect for the people who go into war for our country (and others, for that matter). The novel, comprised of first-person accounts, reads like fiction, though every word is true. The message is important and relevant, and the pages fly by. I highly recommend.
