Platinum Passes $2,000 for First Time on South Africa Shortfall - Bloomberg, Feb 13 2008 12:47PM

Feb. 13 (Bloomberg) -- "Platinum surpassed $2,000 an ounce for the first time in London and New York after mining disruptions in South Africa squeezed supplies at a time of increased demand. Platinum for immediate delivery gained as much as $89.75, or 4.7 percent, to $2,001.25 an ounce in London. It traded at $1,974.50 an ounce as of 4:49pm local time."

This long piece of platinum necklace (900 fineness, almost 80cm in length) is actually made of 2 chains which I'd asked the goldsmith, GoldHeart Jewelry at Parco Bugis Junction, to join them together at the time of purchase in 1999.

In 1999, the price of platinum was only a little bit higher than the price of gold, and thus it was a rare opportunity for me to buy some platinum jewelry relatively cheap.

Today, the price of platinum is two times the price of gold, and so it's gonna cost you quite some money to buy platinum jewelry.
